Martin Residence

Residential Interior Design / Port Moody, BC, Canada

Port Moody is located in a place where smooth hills roll gently down to the sea. The lines of these hills bring to mind a feminine shape. It recalls the work of Matisse, whose art features similarly feminine forms. This is from where the Martin residence will take inspiration. We will create a space based upon the curving lines of Port Moody’s hills and the later artworks of Matisse. This home concept will sit perfectly in its surroundings and inspire the creative spirit in its residents. Port Moody is the City of the Arts, and the Martin home will participate in that culture.

Matisse was long known for his use of bright, bold colors. His later work was created by the arrangement of paper cut-outs. These paper shapes were made of long, smooth curves. We want to take inspirations from these colorful curves in the design of the Martin home. The public spaces of the home will all feature these gentle curves, designed to comfort their many guests. Banquette seating surrounds the living room space, featuring a curving, organic form that invites the guests to sit around the edges. Large windows above the seating open to a view of the western garden.

The Martin home will be a great place to live and socialize, and its Matisse-inspired theme will make for a home that lives up to the City of the Arts title. It will share an appreciation for both the curved forms of modern art and the curves of Port Moody’s natural hills. These curves will invite and comfort the Martins and their guests. The soft tone colors will create an appealing and playful atmosphere that fosters warm emotion. This is our goal for the Martin home renovation project.
